#Adulting101: Growing pains, part 1 ft. WMSDs
Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders
According to Tripartite Alliance for Workplace Safety and Health, work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are characterised by discomfort, impairment, disability, or persistent pains in joints, muscles, tendons or other soft tissues. It can affect employees in the industrial, commercial, healthcare, hospitality and service sectors, as well as offices and other workplaces.
Although workplace-related fatalities were reported to be the highest in the construction sector, the modern workplace culture of slouching in front of computers and prolonged sedentary work have caused WMSDs to be rife amongst desk workers.
Here are some preventive measures to take:
- Treat your body well at work: Use anti-fatigue mats for standing to avoid succumbing to the phrase ‘sitting is the new smoking’
- Adopt the ultimate ‘deskercise’ routine: It is recommended to take mini-breaks of 5 to 10 minutes per hour spent at a workstation, try these desk exercises
- Practise the 20-20-20 rule: A regular screen break to relieve digital eye strain
Chronic pain can lead to a decreased quality of life, disability and elevate the risk of cancer. Stay protected with our health insurance plans.
